Pflueger Pelican 1021 Service Guide

The Pelican the model 1021, is a roller pick-up version of the Pelican 1020. Roller pick-up spinning reels eliminate the full bail which controls the line on, for example, the Pelican 1020, and instead require the angler to use finger control. While requiring more skill, it has several advantages:

  • From a vintage reel service perspective, eliminating the bail is good because on vintage reels the bail can be one of the most difficult mechanisms to service; if for example, the bail spring is worn out, it can be hard to locate a replacement.

  • From an angling perspective, using the finger to control the line allows greater control than an automatic bail mechanism.

Shakespeare provides a description of how to cast using this rather unusual design in his chapter on spinning techniques.
